Josh Zinck has his first victory as a tennis coach. And what a win it was.

The Pekin girls team defeated Mid-Illini Conference opponent Morton 7-2 Thursday on the road at the Joal Stanfield Memorial Tennis Complex.

It was a lengthy battle that could have gone either way.

Seven of the nine matches, including all three doubles matches, went to a third-set tie-breaker. The Dragons (1-2, 1-1) won five of the three-set matches.

"We showed great resiliency," Zinck said. "I'm very proud of this group."

Pekin won five of the six singles matches. Here are the results.

No. 1 -- Amara Howell (Pekin) defeated Lissi Laktas (Morton) 1-6, 6-4, 10-3.

No. 2 -- Kayla Chau (Pekin) defeated Jackie Pfeifer (Morton) 6-2, 6-3.

No. 3 -- Ilyse Knepp (Morton) defeated Ashley Stilling (Pekin) 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.

No. 4 -- Brogan Gresham (Pekin) defeated Casey Hoffmire (Morton) 6-2, 6-4.

No. 5 -- Gabby Gonzalez (Pekin) defeated Ana Mueller (Morton) 6-4, 1-6, 13-11.

No. 6 -- Reeti Patel (Pekin) defeated Tori Leman (Morton) 6-3, 2-6, 10-7.

Pekin won two of the three doubles matches. Here are the results.
No. 1 -- Laktas/Pfeifer (Morton) defeated Howell/Chau (Pekin) 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

No. 2 -- Gresham/Stilling (Pekin) defeated Knepp/Hoffmire (Morton) 4-6, 6-1, 10-8.

No. 3 -- Gonzalez/Patel (Pekin) defeated Marla Weeks/Addie Clementz 4-6, 6-1, 10-7.

Next for Pekin is a match Wednesday against Normal West at the John Moss Courts.

Zinck coached the Pekin boys tennis team this past spring. The Dragons did not win a match.

That was his first season coaching the boys team. This is his first season coaching the girls team.
