The state finals basketball tournaments could undergo a major scheduling change in two years, and the state wants to know your thoughts.

The Illinois High School Association is seeking feedback about a potential schedule change that would move all four classes in each of the girls and boys basketball state finals to a pair of three-day weekends.

The IHSA now holds the boys and girls finals spread over four two-day weekends: Class 1A and 2A girls finals, following by the 3A and 4A girls finals. The small and large boys finals run the following two weekends.

The board also discussed the hosting contracts for the two state finals sites, which are set to expire after the 2020 state tournaments.

In 2019, the 1A/2A girls finals are scheduled for Feb. 22-23, while the 3A/4A girls are slated for March 1-2. The 1A/2A boys finals games are March 8-9 and the 3A/4A boys are March 15-16. The finals will remain over four weekends in 2020.

Under the proposed format for 2021 and beyond — which was included in the IHSA's board of directors release on Monday — all four girls classes would take place March 4-6, 2021. The boys finals would tip off the following weekend, March 11-13, 2021.

The board release did not detail the actual schedule for the two weekends. Presumably, the IHSA would field four semifinal games on each of the two Thursday and Friday dates and four championship games on each Saturday.

As for the hosts in 2021, those are still to be determined. Carver Arena in Peoria has hosted all the boys state finals since 1996, while Illinois State's Redbird Arena in Normal has hosted the girls finals since 1992.

In 2015, the Peoria Civic Center and State Farm Center in Champaign submitted proposals for both state finals weekends — all four classes — of the boys finals. The Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates was in the running for the 3A/4A tournament only. Also that year, Redbird Arena and Bradley University’s Renaissance Coliseum competed for the girls finals.
