PEORIA — Journal Star-area baseball players put their talents on display Tuesday night in the 28th annual Greater Peoria Baseball Association McDonald's All-Star games at Dozer Park.
North rallied to tie the South 8-8 in the first game, which consisted of small schools. West defeated East 10-5 in the nightcap, consisting of large schools. East’s Cole Russell (Pekin) received the Bob Schlemmer Player of the Game award, while North’s Justin Janssen (Princeville) claimed the Mike McDonald Player of the Game.
In the first game, Daniel Frank of Eureka drove in Kaleb Richardson of Midwest Central with a sacrifice fly to push the South lead to 7-2 in the top of sixth inning. Nick Gilpin of North Fulton batted in another run to add to the lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Cole Cox of Peoria Christian drove in teammate Evan McAfee as North cut the deficit to 8-3.
North would scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie, led by Brimfield/Elmwood’s Kyle Doubet and Janssen. Doubet got things started with an RBI to cut the deficit to 8-4, and later in the inning Janssen hit a three-run triple off the right field wall to make it 8-7. He would score from third base on a wild pitch to tie the game at 8-8.
Charlie Hodges and Bryce McMullin of Delavan each went 2-for-2 to lead the South. Janssen, Doubet, Cox and Kewanee’s Griffin Tondreau each had RBIs to lead the North.
In the second game, East went ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Illinois Valley Central player Holt Geltmaker drove in Metamora’s Ryan Vogel with a groundout to first. West player Mike Dunne of Limestone had a base hit to left field which scored Dunlap’s John Day to tie the game in the later innings.
Outside of Russell’s 3-for-3 to lead the East, teammates Vogel, Max Jones (Pekin), Chase Ulrich (East Peoria) and Braden Brown (Morton) each collected one hit. Zach Otten and Luke Ori of Limestone each went 2-for-2 to lead the West, while Richwoods’ Murphy Mannen and Noah Diederich added two hits each. Dunlap’s Taylor Catton drove in two runs for West.
