A Morton man died in Bartonville Thursday morning while operating a crane.

Edward Schimmelpfennig, 61, of 209 S. Montana Ave., was working at the Keystone Steel & Wire Co. plant in Bartonville when the crane he was operating turned on its side, Peoria County Coronor Johnna Ingersoll said.

The incident occured in the scrapyard of the steel mill at the plant, she added.

Ingersoll said Schimmelpfennig was inside the glass-enclosed cab of a crane when it turned, killing Schimmelpfennig inside.

Scott Allen, spokesperson for the Department of Labor, confirmed Occupational Safety and Health Administration has an investigator on the scene.

"They are conducting an investigation," Allen said, adding results could take up to six months.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, Ingersoll said.
