Driving for a title: Morton sophomore Will Headean looks to get past Mark Roth of Washington Tuesday during the second quarter of the Potters' 52-38 boys basketball win. Morton clinched the Mid-Illini Conference championship.

Washington's Mid-Illini Conference boys basketball title streak is over.

Morton (19-4, 12-1) will rest on top of the league by itself after a 52-38 win Tuesday over the Panthers at Torry Gymnasium.

"It's awesome, a great feeling and a terrific reward for these guys," MHS head coach Steve Schupp said. "I couldn't be prouder of what they've accomplished."

The Potters achieved their first M-I title in the sport since 2001-02 after avenging an earlier home loss to Washington (19-6, 10-3).

Drake Taphorn led Morton with 14 points, including three big three-pointers in the second half. Brett Bisping and Tyler Lundeen added 11 apiece.

"I just credit the guys for finding me in the corner," Taphorn said of his long-range shots. "They have confidence in me to knock them down."

The Panthers were conference champions in each of coach Kevin Brown's first five seasons.
