Morton went toe-to-toe with the Springfield girls basketball team for the first 13 minutes Thursday.

But the Senators, the No. 3 team in the final Associated Press Class 3A state poll, eventually wore down the Potters in a 78-48 decision in the Class 3A Champaign Sectional final.

"I'm proud of what we did," MHS head coach Bob Becker said of a 9-1 finish to the 2009-10 season that included four postseason victories. "The Sweet 16 was pretty sweet until we hit the wall tonight."

Morton (18-16) was down only 27-26 with 2:51 left in the first half after a Caitlyn Vandermeer basket.

But a 9-2 run by Springfield (30-2) before intermission foretold what was to come in the second half.

The Senators scored 13 of the first 15 points in the third quarter en route to their second consecutive sectional championship. They were fourth in the state last year.

"Springfield is a heck of a team. They're very capable of winning the whole thing," Becker said.

Mariah Nimmo led Morton with 12 points.
