Ernest J. Aupperle, 90, of Morton, died at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at Washington Christian Village.

Born Feb. 6, 1919, in Peoria to John Gottlob and Augusta Elizabeth (Moeri) Aupperle, he married Martha E. Self Nov. 12, 1964, in Bloomington. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Diane May of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Faith (Larry) Trail of Washington; one son, Stephen (Suzanne) Aupperle of Belleville, Mich.; one stepdaughter, Rita (Michael) Milliman of Murrayville; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Freida (Lowell) Fauber of East Peoria.

Preceding him in death were one son, Theodore, one step-granddaughter, four brothers and one sister.

A member of American Legion Post 318 in Morton, he was a World War II Navy veteran, serving from 1943 to 1945 aboard the destroyer, USS Benner.

He worked at Caterpillar Inc., retiring April 1, 1986, from the paint line.

He was a volunteer with We Care Inc. in Morton and served as a crossing guard for the Morton School District.

He belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Bowling League in Peoria and was a former Boy Scout leader.

Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton. The Rev. Don Rhode will officiate. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria.
