DEER CREEK — Robert E. Schumm, 59, died at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at his home.

Born Sept. 23, 1950, in Bloomington to Robert and Mary (Kribbs) Schumm, he married Vilma Rosales Oct. 26, 1995. She survives.

Also surviving are his mother, Mary Schumm of Deer Creek; one daughter, Josephine (Don) Dodd of Champaign; three sons, Joseph Padilla of Deer Creek, Joel Padilla of Champaign and Jared Schumm at home; one brother, David (and Shirley) Schumm of Deer Creek; and one granddaughter.

He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. until enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served for 14 years on helicopters and straight-wing aircraft, where he earned his wings. He last served in Desert Storm Operations.

After returning from the U.S. Navy he worked for Advanced Technology Services in Peoria as a computer technologist.

He had been a member of the Deer Creek American Legion.

Services were Feb. 1 at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton. The Rev. Henry Miller officiated. Visitation was Jan. 31 at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and prior to the service Feb. 1. Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Deer Creek, with military rites conducted by the Tazewell Military Rites Team.

Memorials may be made to an education fund for his son, Jared, at the First Security Bank in Deer Creek.
