ANDERSON, IND. — Pearl (Stella) Kidd, 98, died peacefully Feb. 17, 2010, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Donald Volk.

Pearl Virginia (Stella) Kidd was born June 7, 1911, in Marceline, Mo., the fifth of eight children. She lived in Oglesby from childhood until 2002 when she moved to Anderson, Ind.  Pearl had an apartment at The Harter House (independent living) from 2002 to 2007, and from 2008 to the present, she lived with Sandra and Don Volk. She was a member of Holy Family Church in Oglesby and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anderson. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Harter House and watching her favorite game shows.

She worked at Westclox for 10 years, Kroger in Oglesby, Pete’s Super Market in LaSalle and Lou’s Super Market in Oglesby, where she retired after 25 years. Pearl was an active community volunteer and leader. She started the first Retail Clerk’s Union in Oglesby and was the first president of the Retail Clerks Union. Her extra-curricular activities were numerous.  She was a member of Daughters of Isabella-Holy Family Church, life member; Altar & Rosary Society-Holy Family Church-active member who said the rosary several times each day and watched EWTN; NOA Program; Women’s Club of Oglesby for 65 years; and she held officer positions and was president from 1974 to 1976. She was an active member of AARP and was tour chairperson for 34 tours; and the Do-Si-Doe’s Square Dance Club, serving as treasurer until leaving Oglesby.

Pearl was an avid knitter who made beautiful baby blankets, afghans and clothing for all her family and friends. She was an excellent bowler along with her husband, Ted, who bowled a perfect game. Pearl loved the Cubs and White Sox and all baseball activities of her husband and family. Her husband of 57 years was in the “Old Timers’ Hall of Fame.”

Pearl had two children, Sandra (Kidd) Volk and Ted P. Kidd; six grandchildren; and a foreign exchange grandson. Also surviving are her son, Ted Kidd of Morton, who has four children, Nikki (Roland) Cantu and daughter, Lucy Gardner, Shannon Kidd and daughter Mattie Neeble, Heather Kidd and Travis (Anna) Kidd and children Connor and Cora Kidd. Carol Colander was Pearl’s special friend in Morton.

Her daughter, Sandra, is married to Donald Volk of Anderson, Ind. Their son, Mark, is married to the former Cathy Tucker. Mark has three children, Amanda, Ethan and Evan Volk. Their daughter, Kimberly, resides in Portland, Maine, with daughters Sophie Pearl Volk and Tonya Spaulding. The Volks also have a foreign exchange son, Ricardo Castro, of Uruguay, South America, who is married to Janette and resides in Virginia with their two children, Cassandra and Nicholas.

Pearl’s husband, Theodore M. Kidd, died Aug. 13, 1992.  They married Nov. 9, 1935, and celebrated 57 years together.  Her parents, Peter and Ginoeffa (Nico) Stella, were both born in Italy. Peter, born in 1875, died in 1957. Ginoeffa was born in 1880 and died in 1961. They both resided in Oglesby most of their adult lives.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.  Deceased sisters are Elizabeth Barassi, Josephine Kriner, Mary Santus, Edythe Dusch, and deceased brothers are John Stella, and twins, Fred and Joseph Stella. Dr. James Ong, her physician, and staff were wonderful and caring.  Dr. Ong visited Pearl at home nearly every week for three months.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Oglesby with the Rev. Michael Andrejek as celebrant. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, LaSalle.
