Obituary: John Getz, 89, Morton

John J. Getz, 89, of Morton, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton, where he was a resident for three years.

Born June 11, 1924, in Morton to Joe A. and Elizabeth (Altorfer) Getz, he married Anna May Lanz on March 4, 1951, in Ellington, Conn. She survives.

Also surviving are five children, Karen Getz of Windsor, Calif., David Getz of Tempe, Ariz., Janet (Steve) Getz Fischer of Morton, Carol Getz of Chandler, Ariz., and Sheri (Dennis) Frank of Bloomington; five grandchildren; and one brother, Henry A. Getz.

After graduating from Morton High School in 1942, he served in the United States Navy on the USS Oyster Bay in the South Pacific Theater during World War II for three years. During this time, he fought in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

At the conclusion of the war, he entered Bradley University, graduating with a mechanical engineering degree in 1949.

His career began at Meyer Co. where he was employed for 12 years until 1961.

He later started Convention Reference Book Co. He also formed J & A Food Stores which included the B-Line Food Store in Morton.

Co-owner of Morton Buildings Inc., Getz served as vice president and also on the board of directors until his retirement in 2003.

He was a member of the Morton Apostolic Christian Church, where he served as a trustee and on several volunteer committees.

Services were Friday at the Morton Apostolic Christian Church, with visitation prior. Church ministers officiated.

Additional visitation was Thursday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Burial was in the Morton Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.
