Obituary: Roger Newberry, 60, of Mackinaw

Roger Earl Newberry, 60, of Mackinaw passed away at 8:36 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, surrounded by family and friends, at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. 

He was born May 20, 1954, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to Robert and Jacquita Newberry.  

Roger married Virginia Ellithorpe on July 16, 1977. She survives in Mackinaw along with one daughter, Sarah (Andy) Chelton of Nashville, Tennesse. Roger was the oldest of four children, David (Donna) Newberry of Jackson, Tennessee, Anita Kessinger of Downs, Diana (Craig) Cheatham of Emden. He was a beloved uncle to eleven nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jacquita Newberry. 

Roger worked at Caterpillar in East Peoria until 2009. After retirement he worked at Mackinaw IGA and most recently for the Deer Creek Mackinaw School District as a groundskeeper.  

Roger loved the Lord and his family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. A sports enthusiast, Roger was passionate about cycling, playing golf and basketball.  

He played basketball in the Illinois Senior Olympics, where his team won the gold medal for the state in their age bracket.

He was a member of Grace Church in Morton, where a visitation was held Tuesday, March 24. Funeral serviceswere Wednesday, March 25, at his church with a brief visitation at 9 a.m. The Rev. Jonathan Farrell officiated. Haensel Funeral Home in Mackinaw is assisting the family with arrangements. Burial was at Mackinaw Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Grace Church in Morton or the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
