Morton girls awarded No. 1 seed

Bryan Veginski

The Morton girls basketball team was seeded first in the Class 3A Washington Regional.

Here is how the rest of the field lined up for games to take place Feb. 16, 17 and 19 (title game):

  2. Washington

  3. Metamora

  4. Limestone

  5. East Peoria

  6. Pontiac

ANALYSIS: The regional now is wide open. Morton was running away with the Mid-Illini Conference until weekend losses to Dunlap and Canton. Limestone knocked off the Potters in Morton, but was swept by Washington. Metamora has two wins over the Lady Panthers, but as the No. 3 seed, must play a quarterfinal game. East Peoria is struggling but is a sleeper with wins over Limestone and M-I co-leader Dunlap. If Metamora gets past Pontiac, Washington would get a third chance to beat the Redbirds. Morton, which still plays three more games against others in the field to end the regular season, will face Limestone or East Peoria in the semifinals. The regional champion advances to meet the winner of the Morris Regional, which is the weakest of the four in the Metamora Sectional.
