Locked up: Morton junior Eric Meyer, in red, competes in the semifinals of the 119-pound bracket at Saturday’s Class 2A Woodruff Regional. Meyer won the championship to earn one of four Potter berths in this weekend’s LaSalle Sectional. Joining Meyer in the second stage of the Illinois High School Association postseason will be Jaren Glasock, Drake Hilliard and Kyle McMurtry. Glascock (112) and Hilliard (140) also won titles for Morton.

The Morton wrestling team will send four representatives this weekend to the Class 2A LaSalle Sectional.

With top-three finishes Saturday at the Woodruff Regional, Potter seniors Drake Hilliard and Kyle McMurtry, junior Eric Meyer and sophomore Jaren Glascock all advanced to the second stage of the Illinois High School Association postseason.

Hilliard (29-6) won the crown in the 140-pound bracket after posting a 16-5 major decision against Cody Smith of Limestone.

Meyer (32-4) was first in 119 after defeating Cody Largent of East Peoria for the second time in a title bout in a week.

With a 15-2 major decision against Notre Dame’s Luke Cusack, Glascock (20-11) emerged with a regional championship.

McMurtry (31-10) attained a clutch win in the third-place clash against Dominic Vaughn of Limestone.

Meyer, in 112, and McMurtry both were regional champions in 2008.

Narrowly missing automatic sectional berths were Morton’s Zach Capelle (103), Bryce Silverthorn (125), Zach Deaton (130), Mitch Henson (189) and Brock Cody (215), all of whom were fourth.

The Potters were fifth as a squad in the nine-team field with 104 points.

Woodruff hoisted the regional plaque after amassing 175 points.

The second through fifth positions consisted entirely of Mid-Illini Conference schools, led by Washington’s 133.5 points.

Rankings: In the Feb. 4 Illinois Matmen Class 2A individual state rankings, four Potters were recognized in some fashion.

McMurtry was listed No. 9 in 285, while Meyer was the No. 10 selection in 119.

Hilliard held the 12th spot in 140, while Cody earned honorable mention in 215.

Sectional: Session I is at 6 p.m. Friday in LaSalle. Sessions II and III are Saturday.

In addition to the Woodruff Regional, the LaSalle Sectional also will have qualifiers from the Pontiac, Geneseo and Sandwich regionals.

The top three sectional placers advance to the state final Feb. 20-21 in Champaign.
