MJHS to shoot for 4A championship Thursday

The Morton Junior High seventh-grade boys basketball team will play Thursday for the state championship.

The Junior Potters (26-0) will face East St. Louis Clark (22-0) at 7:30 p.m. in Dwight to determine the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A state title.

Morton limited Shorewood Troy to four first-half points Saturday in a 38-14 quarterfinal victory.

Joe Kennell led the Junior Potters with 15 points and added four steals.

Corey Dullard supplied seven points, a team-high five steals and three rebounds.

Ian Saatoff and Breck Swinford, who combined for 10 points, were MJHS co-leaders with four rebounds.

Shorewood Troy committed 36 turnovers.

A 19-4 first-quarter burst propelled the Junior Potters to a 20-point win over Rantoul Eater later Saturday in the semifinals.

In a 51-31 victory in Dwight, Kennell produced an incredible 14 assists to go along with 11 points.

Swinford also had a double-double for Morton with team-bests of 15 rebounds and 14 points.

Saatoff was in double figures as well with 11 points and he chipped in five boards.

Rounding out the Junior Potter scoring were Dullard and Nick Taylor with a eight and seven points, respectively.

MJHS reached the state tournament by holding off Normal Kingsley Feb. 4, 30-25, in the Cavaliers’ gymnasium.

Kennell led the seventh graders with 16 points and four assists, while Saatoff topped the squad with 11 rebounds and two steals.

Jacob Morsch totaled six points for Morton, which built a 16-9 lead at halftime.
