Potters lock up share of league championship

Tuesday's 58-51 home win over Washington ensured the Morton girls basketball team will at least share the Mid-Illini Conference title.

The Potters, who are 10-3 in the league, will try Thursday for the outright crown when they host Metamora (7-6).

The final game of the regular season is Senior Night, which will include a starting line-up of all five seniors.

Although the Morton program is comprised of many kind individuals, sharing the conference championship with another team or two is not something the girls have in mind.

But MHS head coach Bob Becker knows Kathy Wainman's Redbirds club will be up to the challenge after already losing to the Potters, 69-54, back in January.

A 68-40 victory Tuesday over Limestone was an indication Metamora is playing well at the moment.

Morton overcame a 10-point first-half deficit against the Lady Panthers to improve to 19-9 on the season.

Brooke Bisping had 19 points, with 11 coming in the fourth quarter. Sarah Hendricks added 16, all of which were scored in the first half.

Canton (10-4) is a Potter loss away from a piece of the M-I's top prize. Dunlap (9-4) also could join the fray with a Saturday win at Limestone.

Interestingly, Morton could see any of its final three regular-season foes — Limestone, Washington and Metamora — again in next week's Class 3A Washington Regional.
