The Morton Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team is the best in the state.

The Junior Potters last night won the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A state championship.

With a 48-36 victory in Dwight over East St. Louis Clark, MJHS completed a 27-0 season under head coach Matt Yarcho.

The title was the first for the Junior Potters in seventh-grade boys basketball since back-to-back crowns in 1989 and '90.

Joe Kennell's 28 points paced Morton, which outscored the Cardinals 20-11 in the fourth quarter.

The Clark loss was its first of the season in 23 games.

The IESA state championship is the first for MJHS since the baseball team in 2007.
