Post 318 tramples Chillicothe

Morton meets Olympia at 7 p.m. tonight

The Morton American Legion Post 318 baseball team began its quest for a 16th District title Monday with a resounding win over Chillicothe.

Behind Will Headean’s 11 strikeouts, Post 318 shut out Post 9, 10-0, in a game shortened to seven innings.

Third-seeded Morton scored in every inning but the fifth at Dave Rodgers Field to put Chillicothe on the brink of elimination.

Bryce Donaldson was 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead a 16-hit attack for Post 318.

Nick Craven was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Matt Schmidt, Ryan Wenell and Nathan Eigsti all chipped in two hits.

Schmidt, Craven, Alex Burritt, Wenell and Matt Wiegand each drove in runs. Wiegand also laced a double.

Headean limited Post 9, the No. 4 seed, to just three hits. He maneuvered around five walks.

UPDATE: Morton (16-14) defeated fifth-seeded Pekin yesterday, 5-1, to move to 2-0 in the tournament.

Post 318 faces No. 1 seed Olympia at 7 p.m. tonight with the winner advancing to the first title game Friday.
