Rudd elevated to state
Freshman will make debut Friday morning
Jacob Rudd made good on his first opportunity to take part in the Illinois High School Association Class 2A wrestling state final.
The Morton freshman placed third in 103 pounds over the weekend in the Sterling Sectional to earn a spot in the elite field at the Assembly Hall in Champaign.
A key victory for Rudd (26-4) came in the quarterfinals against Greg Adkins of Belvidere North.
That 11-1 major decision gave Rudd a walkover win when the grapplers reached the third-place bout.
Rudd’s second win of the sectional tournament was an 18-4 thumping of Johnsburg’s Bobby McKay in the wrestlebacks.
Vince Hill, Jaren Glascock, Alec Geiger, Zach Deaton and Brock Cody combined for nine wins as all six Morton entrants gained a sectional victory.
With a slew of state-rated wrestlers, the Sterling Sectional arguably was the toughest in 2A.
State: Action begins in 2A at 11 a.m. Friday with first-round matches. Quarterfinals start at 6 p.m. on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Rudd, Illinois Matmen’s No. 8 ranked wrestler, squares off against No. 10 Michael Harris of Belleville Althoff in the first round.
The winner meets KeVon Powell, the No. 1 rated grappler from Lombard Montini, in the quarterfinals.
