The Morton girls basketball team's late-season surge reached another level Thursday.

The Potters defeated No. 3 seed Normal U-High, 36-34, to win the Class 3A Bloomington Regional championship.

It was the fifth regional title for the program in the last six years.

Morton (17-15) takes an eight-game winning streak into Monday's Champaign Sectional semifinal. At 6 p.m. in the first of two contests on the night, the girls will challenge Champaign Central on its home floor.

Against the Pioneers, Mariah Nimmo led the fourth-seeded Potters with 19 points. It was the team's second straight postseason win by two points.

Morton trailed 24-22 at halftime before holding U-High to 10 second-half points.
