Girls dust sectional host Champaign Central, 56-39

The Morton girls basketball team is enjoying a deep postseason run yet again.

A 56-39 thumping of host Champaign Central Monday sent the Potters to the Class 3A Champaign Sectional final.

The Sweet 16 appearance is the third for the program in the last four seasons.

Morton (18-15) will face Springfield (29-2) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Champaign Central High School. The Senators were fourth in the state a year ago.

At Combes Gym, Potter Sarah Livingston had 12 of her 19 points in the third quarter and teammate Caitlyn Vandermeer chipped in 17 on 7-of-9 shooting.

Morton, with just one senior on its roster, outscored the Maroons 33-15 in the second half of the semifinal matchup after losing the second quarter, 18-6.

“We had a chance at halftime to regroup a little bit,” MHS head coach Bob Becker said. “We didn’t give up any of those spurts again.”
