Morton High School sports fans eager to make the transition to the winter season will get plenty of opportunities next week.

The boys and girls basketball and wrestling teams all will be in action multiple times.

The Potter boys hoopsters, under the direction of first-year head coach Jarrett Brown, return to the Lincoln/Eaton Round Robin Tournament, which is conducted Monday and Nov. 24, 26 and 27.

Morton, which was 22-5 a season ago, played in Lincoln in the 2001-02 through ’03-04 seasons, going 6-9.

Besides the hometown Railsplitters, who were 28-4 last year, Champaign Centennial has earned back-to-back Class 3A state trophies and Cahokia was a ’10 sectional champion.

After years of extended travel, Bob Becker’s girls basketball program is home again Thanksgiving weekend.

Morton, 18-16 in ’09-10, including four postseason victories, will host its second annual five-team tournament with dates Nov. 26 and 27.

Defending champion Moline, the No. 9 ranked team in the Associated Press Class 4A preseason state poll, headlines the exact same field as year one.

Coming off its best Mid-Illini Conference finish since 1999 — third place — the Potter wrestling team is seeking more accomplishments this season.

Ed Henderson’s squad gets its campaign underway Monday when it welcomes Illinois Valley Central and Richwoods.

The next day, Morton has another triangular in the Quad Cities featuring Rock Island and host East Moline.

If the M-I fall all-conference teams are released this week as expected, a rundown of those honorees also will be included in the next edition.
