Two Morton relays advanced to the Illinois High School Association Class 2A girls track and field state meet.

With their performances May 9 at the Dunlap Sectional, the Potters' 4x100 and 4x200 will compete on the final weekend of the state series.

"I am looking forward to seeing what these two relays can crank out at state," MHS head coach Lynn Rudin said.

The 400 relay — made up of freshman Savina Fischer, senior Brittany Stamm, sophomore Taylor Wright and senior Chelsea Gilles — sprinted to a season-best time of :50.29 to outlast runner-up Dunlap by 0.16 seconds.

The ferocious anchor legs of Gilles in both state-qualifying events were compelling in a high-quality field.

The 800 relay — featuring Fischer, Stamm, senior Ashley Gilles and Chelsea Gilles — was second in 1:47.07, only 0.24 seconds behind the winning Dunlap quartet.

Stamm also took third place in the 100 hurdles in 16.27 seconds.

Chelsea Gilles, Wright, Ashley Gilles and Fischer finished fourth, just 2.11 seconds out of third place, with a 4:10.75 in the 1600 relay.

Bridget Carius missed a state bid by 0.02 seconds with an 11:48.06 in the 3200 run that garnered her fifth place. She rebounded later by running a 5:33.72 in the 1600.

"It was heartbreaking to have her miss qualifying by such a slim margin," said Rudin of Carius. "She then came back and ran a season-best 1600. What a drive and competitive spirit she has."

Madi Day (100 hurdles) and Niya Wells (high jump) both were sixth for Morton.

Hannah Behle added a career-best 800 run time of 2:26.91.

The Potters' 32.83 sectional points left them in ninth place.

Normal University with a nearly 38-point lead over second-place Notre Dame, won the sectional crown as a team.

State: Action begins Friday with the semifinals and continues Saturday with the finals at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
