Potter relay sprints to EIU
The Morton boys track team again will represent the high school at the Illinois High School Association Class 2A state meet.
The Potters’ 4x200 relay — made up of senior Drew Taphorn, senior Chase Taphorn, senior Seth Wilkerson and junior Breck Swinford — met the state-qualifying standard.
The Morton foursome finished fourth in the event at the Class 2A Macomb Sectional in a time of 1:31.48, 0.26 seconds faster than the necessary mark for advancement to state.
The Potters also scored relay points in the 4x100 (third place), 4x800 (sixth) and 4x400 (sixth).
Also on the track, Jeff Abney was fourth in the 200 dash and Swinford placed sixth in the 100.
Cody Hilliard collected Morton’s field points with a sixth in the high jump.
With 18 points, the Potters tied Notre Dame for 10th place as a team.
Metamora nipped Normal University by one point, 92-91, for the title in a 15-team field.
State: Action starts Friday with the semifinals and continues Saturday with the finals at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Drew Taphorn, Wilkerson and Swinford all appeared at state in 2012.
