The Morton District 709 Board of Education approved the appointment of Eric Lyons as a Morton High School physical-education teacher and head football coach at the May 21 meeting.

The appointment is effective for the 2013-14 school year.

Lyons currently is the defensive coordinator for football and a PE teacher at Normal University High School.

He has an accounting and business degree from Eureka College and a master's in accounting from Illinois State University.

He worked for two years in that field before returning to Eureka College for a degree in physical education. He also has a master's degree in kinesiology from ISU.

Lyons has been an assistant football coach at Normal Community High School and Eureka College.

He also was a head track and field coach at Eureka College.

Lyons and his wife, Maureen, have three children — Hazel, 3; June 2; and Pete, 10 weeks old.

"I can't wait to get started. I have a great staff to work with. My big goal is that we get better every time we're on the field," Lyons said.

He has been around football his entire life. His father was a football coach and won a state championship in 1980, the year he was born.

Lyons was scheduled to meet with players and parents Tuesday.

He will replace Jason Thiry, who was 16-13 with two playoffs appearances as the Potters' three-year football head coach.
