The Morton girls soccer team continued its impressive start to the 2015 season on March 31.

The Potters earned a 1-1 tie with visiting Metamora at Rotary Field as Mid-Illini Conference got underway.

The Redbirds, the defending league champion, took the lead in the second half, but it lasted for only about two minutes.

“Our defense was able to weather the storm behind seven saves by Emma Heisler and I am proud of the ladies’ response shortly after giving up a goal,” said MHS head coach Tory DeLong.

“The girls kept their heads high and fought hard for this draw.”

Sami Hall streaked down the left flank in the 60th minute and found Morton (3-0-1, 0-0-1) teammate Kayla McCormick, who was fouled inside the 18-yard box.

McCormick put the ball in the back of the net despite a great effort by Metamora goalkeeper Kate Keller.

“I am very pleased with our second-half effort,” DeLong said. “I felt we began the game a bit flat, and Metamora brought very high intensity.”

Neither side scored in the first half despite several opportunities. The Redbirds outshot the Potters on the night 8-6.

“All in all, I am very pleased with the results of our first four games and our 3-0-1 start,” said DeLong.
