Bryan Veginski

The Morton boys tennis team shut out Pekin on April 14.

The Potters largely were unchallenged at John Moss Courts in an 8-0 Mid-Illini Conference win.

Chandler Stimpert (6-0, 6-1), Troy Hohulin (6-1, 6-2), Mason Plotner (6-0, 6-0), Josh Phillips (6-1, 6-1), Andrew Farmer (6-0, 6-1) and Adam Dryden (6-4 6-2) all triumphed in singles play.

Morton’s doubles duos of Stimpert/Phillips (6-1, 6-2) and Farmer/Dryden (7-6, 4-6, 6-4) notched victories.

Impending darkness prevented the No. 1 doubles match from being completed.

Metamora 5, MHS 4

The Redbirds remained undefeated with a narrow home victory on April 16.

Morton fell to 2-2 in the league, but is still in third place in the standings.

Stimpert/Phillips (6-1, 6-1) and Farmer/Dryden (7-5, 7-6) both emerged with doubles wins.

Stimpert (6-7, 6-3, 6-1) and Dryden (6-2, 6-4) prevailed at the top and bottom of the Potters’ singles line-up, but Metamora held a 4-2 edge in that format.

The Redbirds have won seven of the last eight conference championships in boys tennis.

Pekin Invitational

The Potters were second in an eight-team tournament on Saturday.

With 30 points, Morton trailed champion Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin by just one.

Stimpert capped his run to the title with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of a SH-G foe in the final at No. 1 singles.

Farmer/Dryden were the top performing No. 2 doubles duo after a 7-5, 6-2 win in the championship match against Jacksonville.

Phillips and the tandem of Hohulin/Plotner both were second for the Potters in No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, respectively.

The other Morton placer was Sam Taluc, who was sixth in No. 3 singles.
