Morton seventh graders in Class 4A sectional

The Morton Junior High School seventh-grade boys basketball team won the Regional 10 title Thursday. The Junior Potters defeated Dunlap Middle School, 56-16, Jan. 29 in the semifinals before beating Canton, 58-24, in the championship game. The team's season record improved to 21-1. MJHS faces Normal Parkside (21-0) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bloomington Junior High for the Class 4A Sectional 5 crown. The top-seeded Junior Potters pushed their record to 21-1 after a 58-24 win over Canton Ingersoll in the title game.

Jarrett Crider had 20 points to lead MJHS and Barik Olden added 16.

The Junior Potters scored 46 of the final 58 points after Canton tied the game in the second quarter.

Logan Mooberry chipped in seven points to help send Morton to the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 4A Sectional 5 title game at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Normal Parkside.

In the regional semifinal a day earlier, four seventh graders were in double figures in a 56-16 thrashing of Dunlap Middle.

Eric Hanson generated a team-high 14 points for a squad that was ahead 26-2 after one period.

Crider had 12 points, Olden 11 and Mooberry 10.

The Junior Potters closed out the regular season with wins over Canton, Germantown Hills and East Peoria.

In a 43-32 triumph vs. Canton Jan. 13, Crider had 13 points and Mooberry 11.

Olden supplied team-best totals of nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.

MJHS took control with a 14-6 margin in the third quarter to create a 36-16 lead.

Mason Elsesser's 10 points topped the Junior Potters Jan. 14 in a 43-15 rout of Germantown Hills.

Olden had five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Mooberry, Dan Bailey and Isaiah Sanders all tallied six points.

Crider's 17 points, five rebounds and three steals ignited Morton to a 53-18 victory over East Peoria.

Olden also was a double-figures scorer with 10 points.

Riggs Wilkinson joined Crider with five boards and three assists and also tacked on four steals in addition to his five points.

Mooberry had five points as well for a seventh-grade team that was ahead 36-10 at halftime.
